Coming into yesterday's game, it seemed like it was a lock that the Orioles were going to be swept by the Rangers this weekend. Baltimore's offense was operating at historically bad levels since the start of the month and the team's approach at the plate looked awful. Fortunately, that shifted in the final game of the series in Texas. Orioles fans were finally treated to a game that didn't just display a ten-run rout, but one that also showed positive offensive production distributed quite evenly across nine innings in a way that hasn't happened more than two or three times all season.
Why Raw Hits Can Sometimes Miss the Point
When most people look at a box score, they count hits. A team with 10 hits in a game looks pretty good. One with 4 hits looks bad. The fifteen hits the O's put up yesterday looked impressive on paper. But, hits don't always tell you much about offensive quality on their own. A game with 10 singles, most of them stranded, is fundamentally different from a game where the team consistently puts pressure on a pitcher from the first inning through the ninth.
A better measure is RE24, run expectancy added. Every plate appearance in baseball starts with a specific run expectancy based on the number of outs and which bases are occupied. A leadoff single with nobody on and no outs moves run expectancy significantly. A single with two outs and nobody on moves it almost nothing. RE24 captures that difference: it's the sum of how much each hit actually changed what the offense was expected to produce, adjusted for context.
Applied across an entire game, you can ask a cleaner question: not how many hits did the team get, but how much run-creation value did they generate, and how was it spread across innings?
August 9 by the Numbers
Here's what the Orioles did inning by inning against Texas:
Eight of nine innings had positive RE24. The best single inning(s), the first and second both at +2.75, accounted for just 23% of the game's total run-creation value, each. That's what balance looks like: no single inning carrying the rest, steady pressure from wire to wire.
Where It Ranks Against the Full Season
Measured against all 118 Orioles games played through August 9, this game ranks:
5th in total RE24 (+11.73), behind only the @LAD blowout on June 21 (+13.89), the TBR destruction on May 27 (+13.32), the @TOR game on June 5 (+12.15), and the BOS beatdown on April 24 (+11.82)
3rd in inning spread 8 innings with positive RE24, behind only April 24 vs Boston (also 8) and June 13 vs San Diego (a perfect 9-for-9)
2nd in concentration among top-20 RE24 games only 23% of total value came from the best single inning. Most high-RE24 games are front-loaded or burst-driven. This one wasn't.
That combination, a top-5 total value and top-3 distribution, has happened exactly once before in the 2026 season: April 24 vs Boston, the 20-hit game. That game had more raw production but was more front-loaded (37% concentration vs. 23%). By the balance measure, August 9 was actually cleaner.
What Made This One Feel Different
Most of the Orioles' highest-value offensive games this season came in one of two forms: a big inning that carried everything else, or a handful of extra-base hits concentrated in a short window. The June 5 game at Toronto (+12.15 RE24) was built almost entirely on four innings. The June 21 blowout at LA had the same shape, it was explosive, but clustered.
Yesterday afternoon's game was the opposite, and it felt great to watch a team offense finally string hits together and apply consistent pressure. Pete Alonso hit in the first, second, and fourth innings. Coby Mayo reached base in the third, seventh, and ninth. Jackson Holliday contributed in the first and fourth. Leody Taveras opened the game with a double and closed it with a ninth-inning single that extended the lead.
The eighth inning had no hits but still produced positive RE24, a residual effect from a walk and a productive groundout. Even the scoreless innings were working.
Why This Matters Beyond the Box Score
A +11.73 RE24 game is one of the best offensive performances of the season by any measure. But the distribution matters for a reason that goes beyond aesthetics: an offense that generates pressure across all nine innings is harder to manage than one that concentrates everything in two or three. Opposing pitching staffs can be managed around a big inning. You can't really manage around consistent, inning-by-inning damage.
For an Orioles team that has struggled with stranding runners and clustering hits for most of the season, and especially since the trade deadline, yesterday's game looked like something different. They open up a huge series tonight against the Twins, and then have a really tough stretch against Tampa and the Yankees.
Let's hope this version of the Orioles offense shows up more often than not over the next few weeks. If it does, we could be in for some exciting baseball down the stretch.
